The influence of soft gel axial compression on the packing structure a
nd the associated chromatographic parameters such as dispersion of chr
omatographic zones, retention volume and peak resolution have been con
sidered for size-exclusion chromatography. Continuous time gel compres
sion is accomplished by the use of a special column with controlled ex
ternal pressure applied to the packing. The experimentally obtained im
provement in resolution combined with the decrease in separation time
has been proved.
