Abstract
The development of our understanding of the quantum states of nuclei i s viewed from a historical perspective. The characteristics of nuclear energy levels are presented, and interpretations of these excitations in terms of simple vibrational and rotational modes are presented. Th e application of energy level schemes in a variety of fields is briefl y summarized.
