We experimentally demonstrated the simultaneous transmission of a 2.5
Gb/s packet-switched payload data and an 80 Mb/s control channel using
the multichannel subcarrier multiplexing (MSCM) signaling scheme. A 3
2.3-dB optical power budget was obtained by using a semiconductor opti
cal amplifier (SOA) as a preamplifier, We optimized the subcarrier mod
ulation depth at the transmitter and the tapping ratio at the receiver
. The tradeoffs between different SOA-preamplified receiver configurat
ions were investigated.
