Abstract
Certain rigorous asymptotic solutions to the wave equation with spatia lly dependent wave speed are constructed. These solutions have the for m of inhomogeneous Gaussian pulses, allowing for the determination of the so-called inhomogeneous rays from the solution of an underlying sy stem of ordinary differential equations. Inhomogeneous ray traces are numerically generated for several examples. (C) 1996 Optical Society o f America.
