Abstract
We propose a model for the involvement of type I DNA topoisomerases in the separation of the complementary strands of the DNA double-helix, a process which occurs in DNA replication or transcription. Using this model, we introduce a protein friction associated with the strand-pas sing activity of type I DNA topoisomerase. This protein friction is la rge and could contribute significantly to the overall mechanical load opposing the separation process.
