Abstract
The Australian Medical Association's modification of the absolute rule requiring confidentiality in the doctor-patient relationship may be s een as a coming-of-age of the organisation. However, the change remain s controversial: there are no guidelines as to when breaches of confid entiality are justified; and it is uncertain whether the new formulati on will actually protect the public interest.
