Using TiH2Si, B4C and W as raw materials, a multilevel ceramic composi
te (MLCC) of TiB2-Ti0.9W0.1C-SiC was produced by in situ reactive hot
pressing. This MLCC has three levels: solid solution at the atomic lev
el (Ti0.9W0.1C), particles on a micro-level (SiC particles) and platel
et reinforcement (TiB2 platelets). The three-point bending strength an
d SENB fracture toughness of the composite at room temperature were 67
7.2 MPa and 7.01 MPa m(1/2), respectively. The high temperature proper
ties and the control of the formation of the microstructure of the com
posite will be reported after further work.
