The surface of IRECA steel, a cavitation resistant alloy, was remelted
using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser and tested for its resistance to cavitati
on jet erosion. The weight loss was compared to those of the conventio
nal as-cast specimens. The microstructures of specimens were examined
and related to the steel performance under cavitation jet erosion. Thi
s study indicates that the erosion resistance of the laser processed s
teel was improved, the weight loss rate being decreased by more than 3
00%.
