Abstract
As the move to ''open'' systems accelerates, more vendors will be usin g commercially available networks such as FDDI, Fast Ethernet, and ATM . Unlike the ''proprietary'' DCS data highways which have been designe d specifically for process control application, these networks have al l been born of information processing. They are intended for a wide va riety of applications and afford differing performance characteristics . More than likely, the DCS systems of the future will embody one or m ore of these emerging high speed networks. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
