E. Jagiellowojtowicz et al., EFFECT OF 6-MONTH TREATMENT WITH UKRAIN ON EARLY OSTEOPOROSIS INDUCEDBY OVARIECTOMY IN RATS .3. PRELIMINARY STUDIES OF SOME HORMONE LEVELS, Drugs under experimental and clinical research, 22(3-5), 1996, pp. 181-184
The effect of six-month treatment with Ukrain on the level of some hor
mones was investigated in ovariectomized rats. The serum levels of pro
lactin, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), corticosterone, aldosteron
e and progesterone were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Six months
after ovariectomy, a decrease in prolactin and progesterone levels wa
s observed. No changes were noted in the levels of ACTH, corticosteron
e and aldosterone in the serum of the ovariectomized animals. On the o
ther hand, six-month treatment with Ukrain increased the levels of pro
lactin and progesterone and decreased the levels of corticosterone and
aldosterone in the ovariectomized rats. The progesterone level in the
treated group was four times higher than in the ovariectomized group.
The six-month treatment with Ukrain had no effect on the level of ACT
H of the serum of the ovariectomized rats. The present results show th
at prolonged treatment with Ukrain significantly affects hormone secre
tion after ovariectomy.
