The peripheral cutaneous nervous system is associated with the deliver y of neuropeptides that modulate inflammatory and proliferative proces ses. The focus of this article is on the network of nerves associated with the normal human hair follicle and those affected by alopecia are ata or androgenetic alopecia. Methods used to study nerves and current concepts about the innervation of the human scalp hair follicle are r eviewed.
