ON THE NEW NAMES INTRODUCED IN THE VARIOUS PRINTINGS OF SHELLS OF THEWORLD IN COLOR

The two volumes of ''Shells of the World in Colour'' (Vol. I, ''The No rthern Pacific'' by Habe & Ito; Vol. II, ''The Tropical Pacific'' by H abe & Kosuge) contain many gastropod and bivalve names denoted as new therein. Some of these are nomina nuda made available only in later pu blications. However, the volumes also contain new taxa that are made a vailable but not indicated as such. The problem is compounded by the e xistence of multiple printings of both volumes in which unexplained no menclatural changes have been made. Forty-four species-group names and two genus-group names date from these works. Twelve genus-group names indicated as new were not made available until later. All pertinent t reatments of these taxa are listed.
