Public concern with the national level of violence is discussed, and t
he complexity of the issue delineated. Research findings in two key ar
eas of the topic, media violence and availability of firearms, are exa
mined, as is their applicability to public policy efforts and recommen
dations for the prevention of violence. An approach that combines effo
rts to counteract media violence with those aimed at effective gun con
trol is outlined in terms of bringing about changes in attitudes towar
d violence and firearm possession.
