Ji. Frankel et M. Keyhani, A NEW APPROACH FOR SOLVING INVERSE SOLIDIFICATION DESIGN-PROBLEMS, Numerical heat transfer. Part B, Fundamentals, 30(2), 1996, pp. 161-177
Inverse solidification design analysis represents an evolving area of
research that can potentially affect a large segment of the manufactur
ing community. The objective of the analysis involves designing a tran
sient boundary condition that produces a prescribed interfacial surfac
e motion to ensure a desired morphology. The solution is developed in
the context of a weighted residual methodology in which the temporal v
ariable is treated in an elliptic fashion. This approach does not exhi
bit any of the symptoms associated with the solution of mildly ill-pos
ed formulations. Finally, a conventional test case is presented indica
ting the accuracy, convergence, and stability of the new methodology.
