Four bioactive methyl-migrated 16,17-seco-dammarane type triterpene gl
ycosides called hovenidulciosides A(1), A(2), B-1, and B-2 were isolat
ed from a Chinese natural medicine, Hoveniae Semen Seu Fructus, the se
eds and fruit of Hovenia dulcis THUNB. (Rhamnaceae) together with hodu
loside III and (+)-gallocatechin. The absolute stereostructures of hov
enidulciosides A(1), A(2), B-1, and B-2 have been elucidated bu chemic
al and physicochemical evidence. All were found to inhibit the histami
ne release from rat peritoneal exudate cells induced by compound 48/80
and calcium ionophore A-23187.
