In comparison to occupational segregation, occupational crowding has b
een neglected by labour economists during the past 50 years. We redres
s this by proposing several indices of occupational crowding and estim
ating the value of these indices for Australian women and men from 189
1 to 1991. The empirical results indicate that women have been consist
ently crowded into a narrow range of occupations. Although women are b
ecoming less crowded, the decline is less than that for men. Consequen
tly, the overcrowding of women relative to men is increasing.
