Abstract
A novel synthetic route for the preparation of photodegradable poly(et hylene terephthalate) is described, along with procedures for the synt hesis of C-14-labeled plastic. Studies of the labeled plastic in buria l tests in active soil show that significant levels of biodegradation are achieved over a 2 to 3 year period for both photodegraded and virg in resin. Computer modeling studies are used to assess the desirabilit y and energy cost of various disposal strategies.
