Abstract
It is argued that it is not possible to predict the flux of assimilate
into a sink by making a measurement on that sink alone. Rather carbon
flux is a whole-plant property and can only be predicted from measure
ments made simultaneously in source leaves and sinks, and the transpor
t system itself.
