The Russian Space Agency of the Russian Federation and the National Ae
ronautics and Space Administration of the United States have agreed to
fly a US Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE III) instrume
nt aboard a Russian Meteor-3M spacecraft in 1998 and a US Total Ozone
Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) in 2000. These joint projects are part of
the Russia-US Mission to Planet Earth Joint Working Group under the Go
re Chernomyrdin Commission, and continue the successful Russian-Americ
an cooperation in atmospheric chemistry and physics. This paper descri
bes the organization of the these projects, outlines the development p
lans for the instrument, and provides technical descriptions of the Me
teor-3M/SAGE III mission.
