Motion detectors have many applications in video signal processing. Fo
r interlaced scanning, the principles and properties of motion detecto
rs using frame or field delays are discussed and compared with a new a
lgorithm. A motion detector based on vertical high frequency informati
on has been investigated with excellent results, The algorithm is high
ly insensitive to noise, but very sensitive to motion information espe
cially in the horizontal direction. Advantages are given in many imple
mentation areas.
