The phosphorus K beta emission fluorescence spectra from 10 selected c
ompounds are measured with a high-resolution two-crystal vacuum spectr
ometer. The phosphorus compounds studied include inorganic compounds K
2HPO3, NaH2PO2 . H2O; NaH2PO3 . 2.5H(2)O; Ca2P2O7, Cu2P2O7 and (NaPO3)
(6); and organic compounds tri-o-tolylphosphine (o-CH3C6H4)(3)P; tri-m
-tolylphosphine (m-CH3C6H4)(3)P, tri-p-tolylphosphine (p-CH3C6H4)(3)P
and triphenylphosphine oxide (C6H5)(3)PO. The measured P K beta emissi
on spectra are discussed in relation to chemical environments around p
hosphorus atom in the compounds. It is shown that the P K beta emissio
n spectra are strongly influenced by chemical environments. The effect
of o-, m- and p-methyl substitution at the benzene ring (position iso
merism) is observed in the emission spectra of tri-o-tolylphosphine, t
ri-m-tolylphosphine and tri-p-tolylphosphine.
