Y. Bayraktar et al., HEPATITIS-C AND THE CONTROVERSIES IT CREATES RELATIVE TO LIVER-TRANSPLANTATION AND AUTOIMMUNE HEPATITIS, Hepato-gastroenterology, 43(10), 1996, pp. 873-881
The paradox of hepatitis C. An, agent that persists in tissue for year
s by escaping the immune system and not killing but only damaging its
host while simultaneously being associated with autoimmune hepatitis a
s well as other putative autoimmune diseases is presented. Liver trans
plantation necessitates immune suppression and is associated with prog
ressive HCV disease albeit at a rather slow rate. Diagnosis and treatm
ent concerns are raised and discussed.
