Abstract
A new numerical algorithm for recognizing arcing faults for the purpos e of automatic reclosing is presented. The fault distance can also be calculated using this algorithm. The solution for both symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults is given. A simple empirical are voltage model i s obtained through a table of numerical values. By means of computer s imulation and laboratory testing it is shown that the algorithm ca? be used as an effective tool in transmission and distribution system pro tection.
