The formation and properties of the products of tile radiation-induced
chemical reduction of silver ions in aqueous solutions containing sod
ium polyacrylate were investigated. The absorption spectra of these sp
ecies exhibit a band at 290 nln and a band in tile visible region. The
latter shifts front 470 nm to similar to 800 nm with time or after th
e addition of silver ions. The species obtained (clusterites) are line
ar silver clusters bound to tile carboxyl groups of tile ion exchanger
. The red shirt of the visible band is due to the increase in their si
ze. The mechanism of the formation and the structure of the clusterite
s are discussed.
