The characteristic features of the electronic structure of SbCl(5)L co
mplexes has been studied in comparison with those of the SnCl(4)L(2) a
nd TiCl(4)L(2) complexes. Tile results of X-ray structural analysis we
re correlated with the heats of complexation, tile data of Mossbauer s
pectroscopy, derivatography, quantum-chemical PM3 calculations, and st
retching frequencies of the donor-acceptor bonds. Based on these data,
tile contributions of different effects to tile stabilities of comple
xes were determined, complexation enthalpies previously unknown were c
alculated, and a conclusion was drawn that the electron density transf
er from the donor to the acceptor is small. Tile charge effect of tile
donor consists primarily in polarization of tile acceptor bonds; this
polarization decreases as a result of tile change in the geometry of
the acceptor upon complexation. The relative stabilities of the comple
xes with dimethyl sulfide were determined using a unique internal stan
dard technique.
