Abstract
Indoor air quality has attracted significant interest during the past few years and carpet is sometimes mentioned in that context. The issue has been addressed on a number of occasions by TV and the printed med ia, but in no case has there been balanced, comprehensive coverage of the subject. The media has tended to focus on the sources of chemicals , product-by-product, rarely with firm reference points as to cause an d effect or relevance. This approach is frequently used with mass medi a audiences because it requires little in-depth scientific understandi ng of a very complex issue. Some of the information presented here has never been placed before the general public; the intent is to place t he issue into the proper broad perspective to allow the reader to draw informed conclusions. The significant amount of research that has bee n completed by government, academia, and industry far overshadows the claims made by a few individuals and the media, which are based on no credible scientific work whatsoever.
