The impact of an X(Z) chromosome derivative, the In(1)T2,y(mos)w(Yl)sn
(mYl) strain, on mutation and reversion frequencies in strains with th
e unstable yellow gene is analyzed. These strains were isolated during
a yellow mutation outbreak observed in the natural population of Dros
ophila melanogaster in Uman' (Ukraine) from 1982 to 1991. The In(1)T2,
y(mos)w(Yl)sn(mYl) chromosome was shown to suppress yellow gene mutabi
lity and activate singed gene mutability. A possible mechanism of homo
logous suppression and destabilization is considered.
