Kh. Kim et al., ANALYSIS OF REFINING OF ALUMINUM USING FRACTIONAL SOLIDIFICATION WITHFORCED-CONVECTION, Journal of materials engineering and performance, 5(5), 1996, pp. 651-656
Segregation of iron atoms during refining of aluminum using the fracti
onal solidification technique has been analyzed. The redistribution of
the solute atoms was influenced by the solidification and solid/liqui
d interface tangential velocities. Aluminum purity increased with decr
easing solidification velocity and increasing tangential velocity. The
diffusion boundary thickness was inversely proportional to the square
root of the tangential velocity in the cylindrical rotating system. E
ffects of the tangential and solidification velocities on the effectiv
e redistribution coefficient were investigated. The calculated refinin
g curves were in good agreement with measured values.
