Abstract
The antigenic properties of the influenza A virus drift slowly due to point mutations in the viral genome. The drift is enhanced by the part ial immunity of the host population to the new viral strains. Assuming a one dimensional axis of antigenic types we develop a model for the drift and find that a traveling wave of disease prevalence move along the axis with a speed that depends on the immune surveillance in the p opulation.
