Using an asymptotic method in the tridimensional elasticity classical
equations, we mathematically derive a general model for elastic beams
of variable cross section, which takes into account bending, stretchin
g, torsion and Timoshenko effects, and precise formulae to evaluate th
e axial and shear stress distribution in the cross section. These form
ulae are expressed in a precise way by means of generalised warping, t
orsion, and other, functions depending on the geometry of the cross se
ction.
