Abstract
This paper presents a method to compute unsteady free surface flows wi th good stability properties. The method of characteristics is used to take into account the inertia term in the Navier-Stokes equations, an d to compute the motion of the free surface at each time step. A varia tional form of the surface tension force is proposed for test function s whose trace on the boundary triangulation is continuous and piecewis e P-1.
