The components of the conductivity tensor sigma(xx)(B), sigma(xy)(B),
and sigma(zz)(B) are calculated numerically as functions of the magnet
ic field B and the temperature in the quantum limit, taking into accou
nt the degree of degeneracy of the electron gas and the variation of t
he ''strongfield'' condition as B is varied. The calculated rho perpen
dicular to(B) curves for the transverse magnetoresistivity are qualita
tively similar to their experimental counterparts measured for narrow-
band-gap (Gd, Hg)Te samples in corresponding fields and temperatures.
It is stated that most of the anomalies observed on the experimental r
ho perpendicular to,(B) and rho parallel to(B) curves, usually attribu
ted to deviations from Adams' theory for the conductivity in quantizin
g magnetic fields, are in fact consistent with the theory and can be i
nferred directly from it. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.
