Abstract
The inorganic chemistry of Pb(IV) has been extended by synthesizing th e previously unknown series of octahedral mixed chlorofluoro-anions, P bClnF6-alpha2-, where n = 1 - 5. The series has been generated in CH3C N solution by fluorination of (Et(4)N(+))(2)PbCl62- with XcF(2) and by halogen scrambling of mixtures of (Et(4)N(+))(2)PbF62- and (Et(4)N(+) )(2)PhCl(6)(2-). The salt, (Et(4)N(+))(2)PbF62-, has been isolated and is the first example of a PbF62- salt that contains an organic cation . The entire series, consisting of ten anions and their isomers. has b een characterized in CH3CN solution by F-19 and Pb-207 NMR spectroscop y and trends in the chemical shifts and lead-fluorine coupling constan ts discussed.
