Tornado wind loads and other tornado phenomena, including tornado miss
iles and differential pressure effects, have nor usually been consider
ed in the design of conventional industrial, commercial, or residentia
l facilities in the United States; however, tornado resistance has oft
en become a design requirement for certain hazardous facilities, such
as large nuclear power plants and nuclear materials and waste storage
facilities, as well as large liquefied natural gas storage facilities.
This article provides a review of current procedures for the design o
f hazardous industrial facilities to resist tornado effects.
