G. Caccia et al., THE EFFECTS OF A SUPPLEMENTATION WITH MAG NESIUM ALONE, OR IN COMBINATION WITH IRON IN 9 ATHLETES (MEDIUM-DISTANCE RUNNERS), Magnesium-Bulletin, 18(4), 1996, pp. 90-95
In this double-blinded study on 9 athletes (medium-distance runners) t
he effects of a 3-week supplementation period with magnesium (15 mmol
per day as magnesium-Ir aspartate-HCl) - alone and in combination with
iron (15 mmol/day Mg-aspartate HCl + 50 mg/day Fe-gluconate) - were s
tudied in comparison to placebo (sugar-citrate) on blood and urine par
ameters as well as on energy turnover by determining the threshold to
anaerobic metabolism of each athlete in dependence on the kind of supp
lementation, The data obtained suggest good compliance and tolerance a
nd let us conclude that Mg and Fe were enterally absorbed obviously wi
thout mutual modification. Under Mg supplementation there was a tenden
cy versus decreased lactate production which became significant (p=0.0
33) when supplementation was extended to 6 weeks.
