Magnesium deficiency may be one of the causes of male infertility. Eja
culates of infertile men (n=8) were examined before and after per os I
g magnesium-citrate/day treatment. Under the influence of magnesium th
e volume of the ejaculate and the number and motility of sperms increa
sed and the proportion of abnormal sperms decreased. All this may be d
ue to the effect of magnesium whereby the synthesis of protein and ATP
may be promoted. The activity of enzymes (SOD, catalase) and GSH that
reduce the free oxygen radicals is increased.
