Modern transfer function methods use quite a lot of abstract algebra i
n the design of control systems. In computing the final results, symbo
lic algebra turns out to be an important tool. In this paper, symbolic
computation algorithms will be developed to enable computations direc
tly in the theoretically useful transfer function rings. A symbolic so
ftware package, called Hinf, will be developed and used both for educa
tional and theoretical purposes.
