The adsorption behavior of some monochromophoric and bischromophoric s
tyryl pyridinium dyes on silica gel has been investigated. The effect
of temperature, chain length, and substituent on the adsorption phenom
ena have been studied, The adsorption isotherms are found to be of S-
and L-types, depending on the structure of the adsorbate, The rates of
adsorption have been determined for all the adsorbates and variation
in the rates has been explained in accordance with the structure of th
e adsorbates. The surface area of the dyes has been calculated using l
iterature data and compared with coverage area/molecule. The result is
explained through monolayer adsorption of the dyes. (C) 1996 Academic
