This article presents the results of the quantitative sociological res
earch which focused on the behaviour of the Czech and Slovak towards e
nvironmental problems. The results of the research shows that in both
republics the optimistic-technocratic interpretation of the problem pr
evails. According to the interpretation in favour of atomic energy, sc
ientific and technological development will eliminate all negative asp
ects induced by the growth of industrial production. The reason behind
the unpleasant environmental situation is mostly due to people's indi
fference. On the other hand and in accordance with the technocratic or
ientation, the change of morality is considered to be the state's task
, thus the real participation in ecological movement and actions is lo
w. The author ends his article with a typological summary of attitudes
towards the environmental problem and comments on the differences bet
ween the Czech and Slovak opinion.
