The in vitro release of erythromycin and spiramycin was studied using
a new dissolution method. This method depends upon reaction with 8 N h
ydrochloric acid to give a product with maximum absorbency at 484 and
481 nm, respectively. Reaction conditions such as acid concentration,
time and temperature were carefully studied. The method is simple, dir
ect, accurate, reproducible (relative standard deviation less than 2%)
and covers a concentration range of 2 to 5 mg%. The method was succes
sfully applied to the determination of both antibiotics in tablets. Th
e lower limit of detection was found to be 1 to 2 mu g/ml.
