Rg. Miltenberger et al., SIMPLIFIED TREATMENT AND LONG-TERM FOLLOW-UP FOR STUTTERING IN ADULTS- A STUDY OF 2 CASES, Journal of behavior therapy and experimental psychiatry, 27(2), 1996, pp. 181-188
A simplified treatment for stuttering, involving awareness and competi
ng response training, was implemented with two adult stutterers. The p
rocedures resulted in a decrease in stuttering during reading and conv
ersation for both subjects, although only one subject achieved the cri
terion of less than 3% stuttered words. Long-term follow up (1.5 years
and 2 years 3 months) indicated that gains were maintained by one sub
ject while stuttering increased somewhat for the other subject. Both s
ubjects rated the treatment as acceptable and credible and indicated s
atisfaction with the results. Social validity ratings indicated greatl
y improved fluency from baseline to posttreatment. Copyright (C) 1996
