Although histologically benign, lesions discussed in this review of be
nign lesions of the external auditory canal can, if underestimated, re
sult in significant local tissue destruction. Accurate diagnosis will
not only exclude malignancies but will also identify benign diseases w
ith particularly insidious and locally aggressive growth patterns. Dis
cussed in this article are a few common lesions and several interestin
g, but uncommon, entities that may be encountered. Radiologic and hist
ologic examples supplement descriptions in the article.
