Ce. Carlton et Hw. Robison, NOTES ON MAYETIA-PEARSEI SCHUSTER, MARSH AND PARK, WITH A REVISED KEYTO EASTERN MAYETIA SPECIES (STAPHYLINIDAE, PSELAPHINAE), The Coleopterists bulletin, 50(3), 1996, pp. 244-250
The seasonal occurrence of adult Mayetia pearsei Schuster, Marsh and P
ark was documented in a beech-maple forest in southern Arkansas by mon
thly sampling of sedge rootballs. The species occurred in samples take
n from October through May, and a maximum abundance of 6.5 specimens/k
g of sample occurred in December, 1994. Specimens were absent in sampl
es taken from June through September. All 145 specimens collected at t
he study site were females, suggesting parthenogenesis. Additional loc
ality records from Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina are given
for M. pearsei. Finally, a revised key to the six species of Mayetia
in the eastern U.S. is provided that will permit identification of fem
ales.
