Dynamics of the formation of self-trapped excitons (STE's) and Frenkel
pairs upon band-gap excitation in alkali chlorides has been studied a
t temperatures from 6 to 300 K, it is found that the relaxation of ele
ctron-hole pairs can be divided into two distinct stages with differen
t nature. Frenkel pairs are formed at both stages, whereas the off-cen
ter STE's are generated only at the second stage Characteristic featur
es of relaxation pathways in chlorides have been discussed on comparin
g with those in bromides.
