S. Orimo et al., TIME AND SPACE-RESOLVED OBSERVATION OF POPULATION-INVERSION IN HELIUM-LIKE ALUMINUM PLASMA, Progress in crystal growth and characterization of materials, 33(1-3), 1996, pp. 289-292
Time and/or space-resolved spectra of laser produced aluminium (Al) pl
asma are observed using a framing crystal x-ray spectrometer. A massiv
e slab Al target is irradiated try the second harmonic laser pulse fro
m a Nd:Glass laser system. The pump energy is similar to 15J, and the
peak intensity is 8.5 (+/- 0.9) x 10(14) W/cm(2). Population inversion
s are observed between the 3-2 and 4-3 principle levels of He-like Al
plasma farther than 150 mu m from the target surface. Opacity and esca
pe factors are estimated from the mismatch of electron densities deduc
ed from two different line pair ratios.
