Abstract
We discuss the prospects for a laser-like source of atoms where - in c lose analogy to the laser, and in close analogy to the recently observ ed Bose-Einstein condensation-many atoms of an atomic gas occupy a sin gle center-of-mass motional state. We develop a theoretical descriptio n borrowing concepts from many-body quantum field theory and laser the ory. Our results show threshold behavior, mode competition and Poisson ian atom statistics above threshold.
