J. Aksnes et al., SURGICAL ELIMINATION OF AN ATRIAL SEPTAL ANEURYSM CAUSING CEREBRAL EMBOLISM, The Annals of thoracic surgery, 62(4), 1996, pp. 1190-1192
Atrial septal aneurysms have been recognized as sources of arterial em
bolism. An intraatrial aneurysm was demonstrated in the fossa ovalis o
f a 45-year-old woman who suffered an episode of cerebral embolism. Th
e disorder is rarely treated surgically. Most patients with this condi
tion are given life-long anticoagulation, a treatment that may have se
rious complications. As an alternative treatment with possible lower r
isk, we removed the aneurysm surgically.
