Ic. Iribarren et al., THE ASSESSMENT OF SURFACE DYSLEXIA IN A REGULAR ORTHOGRAPHY, SPANISH - A CASE-STUDY, Brain and cognition, 32(2), 1996, pp. 196-198
The main characteristic of surface dyslexia is the production of regul
arization errors when reading aloud irregularly spelled words. The tes
ting for this dyslexic syndrome in Spanish where correspondence from g
rapheme-to-phoneme is regular can be problematic. Taking advantage of
the highly lexicalized stress pattern in this language, a test was des
igned to assess reading regularization errors. Other manifestations of
SD such as homophone confusion, frequency, word category, and imagibi
lity effects were studied. We report a case of acquired dyslexia and d
ysgraphia in a unilingual Spanish speaker showing ail the symptoms of
surface dyslexia as described for opaque orthographies.
