Substrate properties of new nucleoside 5'-triphosphates modified in th
e sugar moiety 1c-5c toward E. coli DNA polymerase I, Klenow fragment,
reverse transcriptases of HIV-I, AMV and M-MLV, and DNA polymerase fr
om Thermus aquaticus were investigated. The latter enzyme showed stric
t substrate specificity, being inactive toward all of the 5'-triphosph
ates tested. Among the analogues assayed, the best termination substra
te properties were displayed by triphosphate 5c, while compounds 1c-3c
were intermediate in activity and analogue 4c was much less effective
