Solubilization of cholesterol in water with cholesterol-containing pol
y(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) was studied. The non-ionic amphiphilic polyme
rs were synthesized via copolymerization of cholesterol-based monomers
with N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone; the copolymers were dissolved isotropical
ly in water to form hydrophobic microdomains solubilizing cholesterol
efficiently. Electron micrographs revealed that the amphiphilic polyme
rs undergo aggregational changes from random microphases to bilayers a
s free cholesterol is incorporated into the polymeric hydrophobic doma
ins.
